Justin Bieber Protege Carly Rae Jepsen Piques Our Curiosity

MTV News gets to know the 26-year-old 'Call Me Maybe' singer, who has suddenly found herself in the big leagues.
By Natasha Chandel

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jepsen_carly_rae/artist.jhtml">Carly Rae Jepsen</a> has suddenly found herself in the big leagues. <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> recently signed the YouTube pop starlet to his Schoolboy Records label, much like his mentor, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a>, helped catapult him into superstardom when the R&B icon took Bieber under his wing. </P><P> </P><P>It all started when Bieber tweeted, "Call me maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen is possibly the catchiest song I've ever heard," creating an immediate runaway hit of the track off Jepsen's EP <i>Curiosity.</i> And now, a music video <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsBsBU3vn6M" target="_blank">spoof</a> of the song, featuring heavy pop hitters like <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/gomez__selena/artist.jhtml">Selena Gomez</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/ashley_tisdale/artist.jhtml">Ashley Tisdale</a> and, of course, Bieber, has likely made "Call Me Maybe" the song of the season. </P><P> </P><P><div style="background-color:#000000;width:428px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><iframe src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:749364/cp~vid%3D749364%26instance%3Dmtv%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A749364" width="420" height="236" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></div> </P><P> </P><P>"I have no idea why Justin Bieber picked me out of everyone he could have picked, but I'm so glad he did," Jepsen told MTV News recently. </P><P> </P><P>So, who is the girl who wants you to call her, maybe? We already know the 26-year-old Canadian singer has fans in high places, and her track is in the top 10 on the iTunes singles chart, alongside the likes of Adele and Katy Perry. But there is much about this up-and-coming pop singer that you might not know, and MTV News would like to acquaint you with some lesser-known facts about Carly Rae Jepsen. </P><P> </P><P><b>1. She is an "Idol" alum.</b><br> </P><P>In 2007, Jepsen placed third in the Canadian version of the popular "Idol" competition, touring across the country for the "Canadian Idol" Top 3 Concert Tour. During her first audition, Jepsen impressed the judges so much, singing original material, that one judge proclaimed his wish for her <i>not</i> to move forward in the show so he could sign her to a record deal right there and then. </P><P> </P><P><b>2. She might collaborate with Justin Bieber.</b><br> </P><P>The Bieb is certainly "paying it forward." This past Christmas, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1673032/justin-bieber-usher-christmas-song.jhtml" target="_blank">Usher recorded a song with his prot&#233;g&#233;</a> on "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," and now <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1681004/justin-bieber-carly-rae-jepsen-collaboration.jhtml" target="_blank">Bieber has reportedly collaborated on a track</a> with his prot&#233;g&#233;, Jepsen. "I think a collaboration with Justin Bieber isn't out of the question considering we've already gotten together and worked on a little something," Jepsen told MTV News. "But for when that will come out, your guess is as good as mine, but hopefully soon. I like the song." </P><P> </P><P><b>3. She takes inspiration from life and her friends.</b><br> </P><P>Most art imitates life, and it is no different for Jepsen. But she also takes inspiration from the lives of those around her. "I have a fascination with words, so if a girlfriend starts talking and says a phrase that resonates with me, I'll put it down on a napkin and get inspired from that," Jepsen says of her creative process. </P><P> </P><P><b>4. She loves shoes.</b><br> </P><P>Jepsen loves her stilettos. "I have an obsession with high heels mostly because I'm 5' 2" and a girl needs all the help she can get!" she quipped. She will likely have a ball this spring/summer fashion season as the height of heels grows, hopefully in conjunction with her rising stature. </P><P> </P><P>Jepsen has been making the media rounds under the tutelage of Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, who recently told <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/justin-bieber-gives-singer-carly-rae-jepsen-a-boost-20120312" target="_blank"><i>Rolling Stone</a>,</i> "He's [Justin Bieber] never jumped out and promoted an artist like this." </P><P> </P><P>Jepsen is scheduled to make an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on March 22, and it seems the sky's the limit for this folksy addition to the pop world, especially with Justin Bieber on her side. </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you want to know about Carly Rae Jepsen? Tell us in the comments!</i> </P><P> </P><P><div style="background-color:#000000;width:428px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><iframe src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:748863/cp~vid%3D748863%26instance%3Dmtv%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A748863" width="420" height="236" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></div></p>

'Hunger Games' Strikes A 'Perfect Balance,' Experts Say

Three 'HG' webmasters break down film adaptation for MTV News.
By Kara Warner

Did you know that "The Hunger Games" is finally out in theaters? That's a rhetorical question — of course you did!

We've all been following the hugely anticipated film since the beginning, and now we can bask in the glow of its predicted success and the general delight of fans everywhere, not to mention the very positive reviews.

Now, MTV News turns to our most trusted "Hunger Games" experts to find out what they think about the adaptation:

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss
"If anyone had any lingering doubts about whether our Oscar-nominated leading lady could do the role of Katniss Everdeen justice, those doubts took an arrow to the heart. There were a lot of standout moments in her performance — her soon to be iconic 'I volunteer!,' her emotional breakdown after the loss of Rue — but for me, the highest mark of Jen's understanding of Katniss came at the end when (spoiler) she and fellow tribute Peeta are about to commit a double suicide on live TV. In that scene, everything we know about Katniss — her strength, her desire to protect the people she loves, her bravery and the first flicker of rebellion — show through. Unlike the lovelorn Peeta, who uses his final moments of life to appreciate the girl he loves, Katniss has eyes only for the Capitol, looking not at Peeta, but into one of the invisible cameras. This isn't about love, it's about survival, and Jen gets that." — Shylah Addante, Down With the Capitol

"Jennifer was fabulous! Every moment she was onscreen, which was a lot, was just phenomenal. She did a great job of showing how much Katniss cared about her family but was emotionally blank to everyone else." — Jessica McKenna, The Hob

"Jennifer as Katniss is beyond amazing. The depth in which she portrayed Katniss is unlike anything I've seen before. It was all about the subtle things Jennifer would do that made the biggest impact. Whether it was Jennifer visibly trembling right before the arena, getting this panicked look in her eyes when Prim's name is called at the Reaping, her grief at the death of Rue or her look of defiance when giving the three-fingered salute to the people of District 11, I found myself feeling how Katniss must be feeling and left utterly speechless at Jennifer's portrayal of this character. I've said it before, but I think it's definitely worth saying again: Although this fandom doesn't like to identify itself with teams, if I did have to pick, I would definitely be Team Katniss all the way." — Sheila Cordero, HG Girl on Fire

Josh Hutcherson as Peeta
"Insofar as Jen is Katniss, Josh Hutcherson is Peeta. I believed everything he did was motivated by his character's signature pure-of-heart naiveté. Josh ensured that Peeta wore his heart of his sleeve but was careful to ensure that he didn't cross into clichéd romance territory. Scenes like the rooftop and the cave, where he had to play soft to Katniss' hard edge, could have easily been awkward or out of pace with the rest of the film, but Josh gave Peeta a backbone that gave his character's romanticism a solid foundation." — Addante

"From the first time we see Josh onscreen, I was convinced I was looking at Peeta. He nailed Peeta's quiet strength and kindness." — McKenna

"Over the course of the last several months, I've become increasingly impressed with what I have seen of Josh Hutcherson and truly believe he does embody many of the characteristics of Peeta. Watching him bring this character to life, I can honestly say Josh is an outstanding actor. He brought me to tears as he fought back the tears while he was being driven away from District 12 and heading toward the Capitol train. During Peeta's interview with Caesar Flickerman, I found myself rooting for this charming guy who you couldn't help but smile back at, then internally going 'Awww' when he admits his crush is the girl he came to the Games with. But perhaps what I loved the most about Josh as Peeta was the silent communication he had with Katniss. Whether it was him rubbing medicine on Katniss' cut, putting a hand on her cheek or a simple touch of her braid, I couldn't help but find myself falling for the boy with the bread." — Cordero

The Supporting Players
"Wes Bentley's portrayal of Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane gave incredible context to the Games and their entertainment value in Panem. He, by far, had my favorite scene in the film when his character realizes that he's gone from young hotshot TV producer to a dead man — proof positive that it's not just the tributes playing for their lives in Panem." — Addante

"Stanley Tucci was a scene-stealer as Caesar. He expertly jumped from a sympathetic, hard-hitting, Barbara Walters-esque interviewer to an über-hyper, Richard Dawson-ish game-show host and back again second by second." — McKenna

"For me, the biggest and most pleasant surprise of all was Willow Shields as Prim. Her scenes with Katniss at home and during the reaping just break my heart. She displayed a depth to her character that is rare in an actor as young as she is. I really felt her fear when her name was called and then her agony as she is carried away by Gale once Katniss volunteers. Willow amazed me." — Cordero

Page-to-Screen Adaptation
"One-hundred percent, this is the best page-to-screen adaption of a film I've seen. It gave the perfect balance of what longtime fans of the series would be excited for, but knew where to trim things down to make the movie work. The best example of this is the infamous cave scene, which, in the book, stretches on for page after glorious page of Katniss and Peeta kissing, enjoying sponsor gifts, and seducing the nation into believing their love story. In the movie, however, we get one kiss and a couple very intense moments of connection from the star-crossed lovers, and that's all we needed. Had Gary Ross pulled an 'Eclipse' and stretched out every lingering glance and hung onto each word of dialogue, I have no doubt that it would have felt out of place and cheesy in a movie that, otherwise, is very pragmatic and real." — Addante

"The overall adaptation worked really well. Like many fans, I wasn't thrilled with some of the finer points that were left out of the screenplay. However, it all worked in the end and didn't really miss anything that was cut. Plus, the scenes they created for the movie with President Snow and the Gamemakers really helped round out the story and provide additional insights to viewers." — McKenna

"I think that Gary Ross and [author] Suzanne Collins did a wonderful job of adapting this book into a movie. Their use of Caesar Flickerman and Claudius Templesmith as announcers and commentators about the games was brilliant and a really smart, creative way to bring some of the backstory and terminology into the movie. I loved the added scenes between President Snow and Seneca Crane because it helped to lay the foundation of how Katniss ultimately becomes the symbol that sparks the rebellion and will help people who haven't read the books understand that there is more to this story than just a young girl's survival in the Games. I also enjoyed some of the changes they made to Peeta's portrayal in the movie. I loved that Peeta was not portrayed as helpless in the final battle with Cato. It really showed him to be more of Katniss' equal and not someone she is continually trying to save." — Cordero

Ed Helms Joins Mindy Kaling's Fox Pilot -- Is 'The Office' in Trouble?

Is anyone even going into The Office (Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET, on NBC) these days? It seems like all the news about NBC's top-rated comedy is focused on departures. Mindy Kaling's developing her own show. So is Rainn Wilson, who's taking Paul Lieberstein (writer-producer and portrayer of sad sack Toby) with him. James Spader's not returning. And now comes word that Ed Helms has a part in the pilot for Kaling's as-yet-untitled sitcom.

Jennifer Lawrence Covers IO Donna March 2012

With her new movie "The Hunger Games" having just stormed into theaters, Jennifer Lawrence added to her many front page efforts by scorning the cover of the March 23, 2012 issue of IO Donna magazine.

The 21-year-old actress looked elegant in a colorful frock as she posed for Max Abadian while opening up about topics such as being discovered at age 14 and where she sees herself a few years from now.

Highlights from Miss Lawrence's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to IO Donna!

On whether she feels ready for this big change:
"Yes, I'm ready, but also terrified. But then how do you feel ready for something you do not know? I ... I'm afraid."

On being discovered:
"By pure chance. I was 14, I was in New York with my mother, standing on the sidewalk watching a rap-dancer, when a guy with a camera comes up and asks permission to take a picture. 'Why not?' my mother says, amused ... In New York anything can happen. After a week I got a call at home and was asked to make a commercial. In short, I became a model, but without much enthusiasm. My agent, however, was always there, hammering: 'Would you rather be a successful model or actress who is starving?' For goodness sake, I have not had a moment's hesitation."

On the runaway success of the 'Hunger Games' trilogy:
"We live in a world obsessed with reality shows, we use the personal tragedies to entertain the audience and we want to shock people to succeed."

On where she sees herself in a few years:
"With a family and many children. Acting is my job, but it is only a small part of my life, certainly not the most important. What really counts for me is to build lasting bonds."

Is Britney Spears Getting Closer To 'X Factor' Gig?

'I'm fascinated by her,' Cowell says of singer, who's rumored to be contender to join show.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>There are several women's names currently being tossed around as potential judges for the upcoming season of "X Factor." Avril Lavigne, <a href="/news/articles/1679730/x-factor-new-judges-hosts.jhtml">Janet Jackson and Britney Spears</a> are the leading rumored contenders to replace <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul</a> for the show's completely revamped second season, which kicks off later this year. </P><P> </P><P>In a recent press call, Simon Cowell would not confirm who producers were talking to, but he did not deny that Jackson was on the table. </P><P> </P><P>"You can probably count on two girls," fellow judge L.A. Reid added. "That we can confirm." </P><P> </P><P>Cowell recently addressed the Britney buzz on Billy Bush's <a href="http://www.accesshollywood.com/billy-bush/simon-cowell-x-factor-would-be-a-walk-in-the-park-for-britney-spears_articletab_61327" target="_blank">radio show</a>, continuing to play coy about the chatter. "Well, I'm fascinated by her. The fact that she's still one of the most talked-about &#8212; not just pop stars, but people &#8212; in the world today means that you've got this star power. This girl's got resilience, and the fact that she's survived this and she's still hot, she's still having hit records and she's still controversial ... there's a reason for that. </P><P> </P><P>"I would think that if she's managed to sustain a family, a career, which is tough, this is a walk in the park," he added, noting that he believes she would be a good judge. </P><P> </P><P>While Cowell seems to be dancing around the issue, British "X Factor" judge Louis Walsh may have let the cat out of the bag in an <a href="http://www.breatheheavy.com/2012/02/uk-x-factor-judge-confirms-talks-with-britney/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed" target="_blank">interview</a> on U.K. talk show "Craig Doyle Live." He shared that Spears was indeed talking to producers about possibly joining the show. </P><P> </P><P>"I know he is talking to Britney. I know he's definitely talking to Britney to do the American show. Absolutely true and maybe Janet Jackson," he said. </P><P> </P><P>In the end, Cowell summed up the current spate of rumors on that conference call. "There's a load of speculation, some true, some not true. It's true to say that a lot more people have entered the frame this year. We were waiting to see who was going to contact us before we actually contacted people," he said last week. "We're in that place right now, which is a good place to be in. We will meet a number of people over the next few weeks, mainly to explain to them that this is a big commitment when you do a show like this because of the mentoring aspect."</p>

Swedish House Mafia's Fiery Masquerade Motel Welcomes 10,000 Guests

EDM trio kick off explosive two-day fest at Miami Music Week with help from heavy-hitting openers like Thomas Gold and Calvin Harris.
By Akshay Bhansali

MIAMI — On Friday, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello — the trio also known as Swedish House Mafia — gave fans at Miami Music Week an event to remember. Their two-hour-plus spectacle at Grand Central Park featured stadium-style house music with a backdrop of pyrotechnics and fireworks.

Add to that the dazzling graphics bouncing off five enormous LED screens, and it was clear that SHM had accomplished an impressive high mark that won't be easy match on Saturday night (March 24), when the event kicks off its second day. MTV News caught up with the Swedes just before their set and they talked to us about the long road to their massively successful Masquerade Motel mini-festival.

"We've done it again," Angello raved. "For [us], to go out there and enjoy our own party, which is something like this [in scale], it's amazing to be here." Last year's tented, single-day Masquerade party on South Beach "was amazing," Angello added, "And the year before that was amazing; we've come a very long way."

Lined with palm trees, tall office buildings and residential apartments, Grand Central Park had the vibe of being isolated from the rest of Miami, and that made a party filled with 10,000 SHM fans feel intimate. But before the trio even took the stage, a spectacular lineup of opening acts did more than warm up the crowd. Asked about the all-stars preceding them, Seb, Ax and Steve beamed with pride.

"We have NO_ID," Axwell said of the Dutch duo newly signed to his Axtone Records imprint. "We just think that they have a really interesting sound, which is kind of like chunky-groovy-sexy house, so it complements what we are doing very well. Otto Knows is also here."

"[Otto is] a young kid from Sweden, one of my really close friends," Ingrosso chimed in. "He's like my little brother. We are starting to make music and he just released his first single ever."

"Thomas Gold is here," Axwell added. "Alesso, a guy called Calvin Harris."

"Yeah, I don't know if you know him," Ingrosso chuckled with a knowing nod to Harris' accolades on the EDM scene and, most recently, for his work with Rihanna.

"Yeah, he's another guy we found," Angello joked.

"No, Rihanna found him!" Axwell laughed. "He's always been very interesting and doing creative stuff."

By the time the Swedes took their positions behind the decks, it was clear 10,000 screaming fans were ready to take the party to the next level. Just as they've done on their last two Stateside Masquerades, they launched into the organ-laden edit of Ax & Sebastian's "Together"; they followed that with their latest hit single, "Greyhound," marking the song's drop with a fireworks display.

What followed was a clever series of mixes of some of the most popular anthems of the past six months. Among them were Axwell's edit of Michael Calfan's "Resurrection" mixed into Fedde Le Grand's remix of "Paradise," and "Antidote," which was given a pyro burst. The crowd went mental when Dirty South and Usual Suspects' "Walking Alone" was blended perfectly with SHM's "Miami 2 Ibiza."

"That's right, Miami, it is straight appreciation for 'Miami 2 Ibiza,' " Ax told the crowd. "We realize there are a lot of parties this week and we definitely feel honored that you've come to us this week!"

SHM also treated fans to set staples, including "Troll"; Nari & Milani's "Atom"; Ingrosso, Alesso and Ryan Tedder's "Calling (Lose My Mind)"; Deniz Koyu's remix of "Dangerous"; and SHM's remix of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall."

"Are you making new friends?" Axwell asked the partygoers. "Maybe some from the opposite gender? Maybe falling in love? For sure, we are falling in love. The Swedish House Mafia loves you guys. Thank you for coming down!"

But one of the most unexpected gems of the night came at the very end, when fans got to hear a cook-up Axwell told MTV News in our pre-set chat that he couldn't wait to play: The SHM/Laidback Luke collabo "Leave the World Behind" (featuring Deborah Cox) was merged with Knife Party's remix of Porter Robinson's "Unison." That mashup was received with a roar from the crowd as the high-energy dance party became another one for the books.

NO_ID, Third Party and AN21 join Alesso and Calvin Harris as openers for Swedish House Mafia on the second (and final) day of the Masquerade Motel on Saturday (March 24).

Miami Music Week is going down, and MTV News is on the ground! Check back all week as we report from EDM's biggest parties, bringing the latest news from your favorite electronic dance music stars!

Lana Del Rey 'Compelled' By Britney Spears

Label boss Jimmy Iovine calls criticism 'a drag.'
By Gil Kaufman

<P>To look at her, you'd think <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rey_lana_del/artist.jhtml"_blank">Lana Del Rey's</a> inspirations come mostly from 1940s detective movies and sepia-toned Hollywood pinups. But the "Video Games" singer told England's Magic 105.4 that one of her big fashion and music icons is Britney Spears. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Lana Del Rey Says Her Lyrics 'Are Personal'" id="vid:724891.id:1677189" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>"I'm not really interested in a ton of female musicians but there is something about Britney that compelled me &#8212; the way she sings and just the way she looks," Del Rey said. And even though she's just released her major-label debut under the Del Rey name, she added that she's already kind of over music-making. </P><P> </P><P>"The thing that makes me happy now isn't really singing," she said. "Music was once the be-all and end-all, but when you lose everything you have over and over again, it's not so important." </P><P> </P><P>It might be a bit early for her to bail on the whole music thing though, since her album, <I>Born to Die</I>, topped the iTunes album charts in 14 countries this week, including the U.S., U.K., Italy, France, Germany, Ireland and Mexico. </P><P> </P><P>The chart triumph &#8212; and a possible #2 debut next week on the <I>Billboard</i> albums tally &#8212; came despite a rash of negative or <a href="/news/articles/1678050/lana-del-rey-album-born-to-die-reviews.jhtml">middling reviews</a>&#8232; of the album as well as the continuing fallout from her shaky <a href="/news/articles/1677389/lana-del-rey-snl.jhtml">"Saturday Night Live"</a>&#8232; debut last month. </P><P> </P><P>The haterade has gotten her label boss, Interscope's Jimmy Iovine, to chime in on the flack his latest protégé has been taking. 'Hunger Games': Why The Movie Beats The Book

In this week's 'Hunger'-focused episode of 'Talk Nerdy,' we compare the soon-to-be-released film to Suzanne Collins' novel.
By Josh Wigler

"The Hunger Games" are upon us at last. In the land of Panem, this would not be news worth celebrating. In our day and age of modern movie-going, however, the arrival of Gary Ross' cinematic take on Suzanne Collins' dystopian novel is anything but bad.

Indeed, "The Hunger Games" is more than "not bad" — it's great. It might even be exceptional. In fact, I'm ready to call it: Respectfully, I strongly feel the "Hunger Games" movie is better than the "Hunger Games" book. Before you kill me, hear me out, and I'll try to walk you through my reasons.

» In the movie, you see everything. Though the book unfolds entirely through the perspective of bow-wielding heroine Katniss Everdeen, the "Hunger Games" film is free of that point of view and allowed to explore other characters operating much further away from our lead. If you were wondering how Haymitch wrangled sponsors in favor of Katniss during the games, wonder no more — the movie has the answer. What's Gale up to while Katniss is busy fighting for her life? You'll see. Cutting free from the Katniss POV allows for a freer story, opening the already huge world of "Hunger Games" in an even huger way.

» Purists, don't sweat it; you won't miss Katniss' narration. Yes, experiencing everything from your front-row seat inside Katniss' mind is a huge draw in the books, and it works in that medium. Here, we get our Katniss fix by different means that make more sense on film — namely, through Jennifer Lawrence's performance. An amazing, emotional, impactful performance, I might add. Initial controversy aside, the decision to hire an Oscar-nominated actress to play the lead role in this young-adult action/adventure was the greatest call made by the "Hunger Games" team. Lawrence lets you into Katniss without ever once telling you exactly what's on her mind. She plays the character in such a way that you see her brilliant moves coming but are still surprised to see how her actions unfold. Lawrence is Katniss, and she becomes her without revealing a single thought out loud. It's impressive stuff. Also, the Katniss perspective — her overwhelming emotions and thoughts and experiences — still comes through, not just by way of Lawrence's work, but also Ross' ability to weave different elements together, from sound to cinematography and beyond. Katniss' experience is a dizzying one, and even without her thoughts beside you, you'll experience plenty of that same dizziness firsthand.

» Katniss aside, the real human star here just might be Seneca Crane. Wes Bentley delivers a great turn as the gamemaker, who has a smaller role in the "Hunger Games" novel, but a crucial, movie-opening part to play in Ross' film. Without Katniss' perspective, we're allowed to spend time with Seneca not just in the control room — which is completely awesome and another point in the movie's favor, by the by — but also opposite President Snow. Bentley and Donald Sutherland share several scenes that do not exist in Collins' novel. Including these moments in the movie helps pave the way for what's to come in subsequent "Hunger Games" movies like "Catching Fire" and the rumored two-part "Mockingjay." In other words, Seneca's increased screen time is a huge boost for the overall "Hunger Games" mythology. It also doesn't hurt that he has the greatest beard in the history of the universe.

» The Capitol. The Cornucopia. Rue's song. The cave scene. Heck, even the muttations, weird as they are. All of these things, written about vividly in the books, come to startling life in Ross' hands. You get all the familiar beats and scenes and interactions from Collins' fantastic tale, faithfully rendered to the letter. But the subtlety in the director's adaptation, helped along greatly by the cool score from James Newton Howard and T-Bone Burnett, elevates what was great about the source material to brand-new heights. That's what you want from an adaptation — elevation, enhancement — and to that end, "Hunger Games" succeeds fantastically, in ways "Twilight" and even "Harry Potter" never fully achieved.

» It also comes down to personal preference. I don't worship the book the way others do, but I'm definitely a fan. For me, the movie just popped in a way that Collins' original narrative did not. "The Hunger Games" brings the world you fell in love with to the big screen and proceeds to bust it wide open in unexpectedly beautiful and tragic ways. All of it stems from a great book, yes — but it all builds to an even better movie, in my humble opinion.

Do you think the "Hunger Games" movie is better than the book? See what our panel of experts thought in this week's "Talk Nerdy," and hit me up with your own thoughts in the comments or on Twitter @roundhoward!

Kristen Stewart To Make 'Micro-Cameo' In'K-11'

Stewart will have a 'small' voice-over role in the transgendered prison film, which is her mother's directorial debut.
By Jocelyn Vena

Kristen Stewart

It seems that "K-11" is once again a family affair. The film's director, Jules Stewart, has managed to find a role for her superstar daughter, Kristen Stewart, who had previously exited the film. Her brother, Cameron, will also be in the film.

Jules told E! Newsthat even though shooting on the film is complete, KStew really wanted to lend her support to the film, noting that Stewart's part is all done in voice-over.

"Kristen has always been supportive of 'K-11,' but you'll have to look very hard to find her. It's a micro-cameo," her mom told the website. "We'd already finished shooting the movie, but Kristen still wanted to be a part of it in some way."

The news of the cameo first broke on Jules' page, when she wrote, ""Excited to say that a final stage addition to @K11OfficialFilm is Kristen playing a small role. #K11"

So, who will K-Stew be playing? She'll play Goran Visnjic's secretary. The story follows his character, a record producer who binges on drugs and alcohol. He eventually finds himself in Los Angeles County Jail and in the section of the jail occupied by gay and transsexual inmates, run by one of the inmates named, Mousey.

Stewart had been attached to the film before dropping out last year. Her "Twilight" co-star Nikki Reed had also been attached to the film at one point. This film, which marks the directorial debut for Jules, also stars D.B. Sweeney ("Hard Ball") and Portia Doubleday ("Youth in Revolt"). There's no release date for the film yet, but it may be premiering at the Berlin Film Festival.

'American Idol' Top 10 In A Billy Joel State Of Mind

Jessica Sanchez and Elise Testone both earn standing ovations for their renditions of Piano Man classics.
By Adam Graham

Wednesday (March 21) was Billy Joel night on "American Idol," and as the top 10 contestants took on the Piano Man's catalog, some big moves were made in the "Idol" ranks. Jessica Sanchez took a step toward reclaiming her frontrunner status, Elise Testone sang for her life after two consecutive weeks in the bottom three and Erika Van Pelt debuted a stunning new look, but only Heejun Han used the evening as an opportunity to directly address his critics.

Singing Joel's "My Life," Han — who was knocked by the judges last week for his lackluster performance of Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" — approached the judges' table and sang to Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. "Keep it to yourself, it's my life," Han sang playfully. "Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone."

Han began the song wearing a tux, but tore it off to reveal a T-shirt/ button-up combo. Han jumped into the audience at one point, and was so carefree with regard to hitting his proper notes that the whole thing bordered on parody. The judges didn't quite know what to think or say about it; they praised him for having fun, but only to a point. "The music business will kick your ass," Tyler told him. "At some point, you've gotta try to take it more serious."

Guest mentor Diddy didn't seem to know what to make of Han either. "I don't know if he's an actor or a con man," Diddy said. "I don't even know if he's Asian. He may be black." (Han later told Ryan Seacrest Diddy is "confusing himself already.") To round things out, Han also had an awkward confrontation with "Idol" style guru Tommy Hilfiger, telling him his style icons include Jessica Sanchez, Madonna and Michael Bolton. Han has clearly been studying "How to Win Friends and Influence People" during those late "Idol" nights.

Back to Sanchez, Han's style role model: She received a standing ovation from the judges, one of only two during the night, for her version of "Everybody Has a Dream." "When God was giving out vocal chords, you were so at the front of the line," Tyler told her. Lopez called it a "defining moment" for Sanchez, while Jackson called it "flawless" and "perfection."

The other standing O was given to perennial bottom-dweller Testone, who gave the evening's most riveting performance, tearing through Joel's "Vienna" with a vigor that proved she wants to stay in the competition. Jackson even bowed to her in a "Wayne's World"-type "I'm not worthy!" gesture as the song came to a close. "Unbelievable," he called it, saying she had a moment on stage, while Tyler called her melody "fantastic." "You were all over the place and you still stayed in the room," he said, one of those Tyler-isms that only he truly understands.

Meanwhile, Van Pelt debuted a dramatic makeover that saw her long, blonde-and-pink hair chopped in favor of a short, angular, jet black 'do inspired by Pink. The Rhode Islander sang "New York State of Mind" like a true New Yorker, but was told she should be more physical with her next performance.

In the middle of the pack, Joshua Ledet — who brought the house down last week with his version of "When a Man Loves a Woman" — struggled a bit to connect with "She's Got a Way," a song he was admittedly unfamiliar with until it fell into his lap. Skylar Laine's "Shameless" was inspired by the Garth Brooks version of the song — no matter the theme, Laine will find a way to give it a country once-over — which was "pretty good" and "good," according to Jackson and Tyler, respectively. Phillip Phillips took "Movin' Out" and "Phillip Phillips'd" it, according to Tyler, which is kind of what Phillip Phillips does to every song. (Jackson was overly enthusiastic about it, calling it "one of the best renditions of that song ever," and Lopez called it "perfect.") Hollie Cavanagh went for another big ballad with "Honesty," which Tyler called the dreaded "P" word, "pitchy." Jackson said she over-thought the song. "You're better than that, come on now," he told her. And Deandre Brackensick opened the show with a bouncy version of "Only the Good Die Young" that felt forced and unnatural. "I wasn't jumping up and down because it didn't show me anything special," Jackson told him.

Colton Dixon closed the show with Joel's classic "Piano Man," giving the song more of an emo feel; he "Colton Dixon'd" it, if you will. Jackson called it a "sensitive, touching, moving performance," while J. Lo gave her highest compliment, saying the song gave her "goosies from head to toe."

One of the 10 singers faces elimination during Thursday's "Idol," which is set to feature a performance from Season 10 finalist Haley Reinhart.

What was your favorite performance on Wednesday night's show? Let us know in the comments!

Ke$ha Is Channeling 'Sexiness' Of '70s Rock For New Album

Glitter-heavy pop star tells MTV News she's going for 'balls-out, irreverent rock and roll.'

<P><a href="/music/artist/_kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a>'s already got the face paint down pat, and, during recent live sets, she's even taken to <a href="http://www.popeater.com/2011/03/17/kesha-drinks-blood-during-performance" target="_blank">guzzling blood</a> out of a human heart, so it should come as no surprise that, on her upcoming album, the pop star is taking things back to the most <i>theatrical</i> era of rock: the prop-heavy, arena-spanning heyday of the 1970s. </P><P> </P><P>Ke$h revealed her plans over the weekend in Los Angeles, on the red carpet of KIIS FM's annual <a href="/news/articles/1663909/wango-tango-britney-spears-kesha.jhtml">Wango Tango</a> concert, where she told MTV News that the follow-up to her breakout <i>Animal</i> album (and, we suppose, <a href="/news/articles/1652714/kehas-cannibal-a-cheat-sheet.jhtml"><i>Cannibal</i></a> too) would be heavy on hard riffs and light on pretty much <i>everything</i> else. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Ke$ha Says New Album Will Be ' Balls-Out, Irreverent Rock'" id="vid:652875" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>"The next album ... Sorry, Gwyneth! 'NYT' Stands by Paltrow Ghostwriter Story

Gwyneth Paltrow might think that The New York Times' "facts need checking" -- but the venerable newspaper is quite happy with the facts they have, thank you very much. And so the Times is standing by a story it ran in the dining section last week claiming that Paltrow and other celebrity chefs -- including Jamie Oliver, Rachael Ray and Mario Batali -- have used a ghostwriter to pen their cookbooks.
